When did the the English reformation start?
English reformation began in 1532 in Europe they believed Roman Catholic Church had become corrupt so they became protestants and established their own churches
By 1558 reformation teared Europe as beliefs that were practiced for centuries were threatened by social and political hierarchies.
What language did the protestant believe the bible should be in?
protestants believed it should be in your own language so it is easier to understand.
Extreme protestants wanted to base their religion solely on what the bible said. This lead to countries dividing and religious wars.
Who was the true protestant in Elizabeth family?
Elizabeth’s 1 brother Edward 6 was the only true protestant and even though Henry was the head of church of England he didn’t believe some protestant beliefs.
Who were the puritans?
Puritans were extreme protestants who wanted to “purify” the Christian religion by getting rid of anything that wasn’t in the bible. Puritans wanted to be in control of their own churches and the churches would be very basic.
When was the religious settlement established/and what was the act of supremacy?

ACT OF SUPREMACY: Elizabeth was supreme governor in the Church of England, clergy and royal officials had to swear an oath.
What was the punishment for not attending church?
However if you did not attend you had to pay a shilling which is 12 pence. This was not a problem for the nobility but it would be a problem for servant, labourers and skilled craftsmen as the fine would be a weeks worth of wages!
What was the royal injunction?

- clergy had to teach royal supremacy
- anyone who refused to attend church had to be reported to the privy council
- each parish had to have a copy of the bible in English
- Pilgrimages and monument’s to “fake” miracles were banned
- clergy had to wear special vestments
How were the clergy impacted by the religious settlement?
- All members of the church had to take the oath of supremacy
- 8000 priest took the oath so the religious settlement was a success
- only 1 bishop agreed to take the oath and Elizabeth appointed 27 new bishops
- she could not afford to lose support of these new bishops as there was not many qualified protestant clergy in England.
How did people react to the religious settlement?
Many people accepted protestants and attended church even if they were Catholics
In some places like Lancashire they were many catholic and they were slow to change the church service but Elizabeth didn’t want to force her religious settlement
Protestants welcomed Elizabeth religious settlement with violence enthusiasm
What was the role of the church of England?
It controlled what was preached-(priests needed a special license from the government)
It gave guidance to communities-(people turned to their churches in times of hardship)
It enforced the religious settlement
It legitimised power to the monarch
It ran church courts
What moral issues did the court churches take care of?
*Marriage(made sure the bride and groom were marrying from their own will)
*Sexual offences(bigamy-being married more than one person at the same time)
*Slander|(false insults)
*Will and inheritance
other cases like civil cases robbery, fraud, rape were all dealt by the ordinary court system
Why were visitation taking place
The church had to enforce the religious settlement and visitations had occurred to make sure everyone took the oath of supremacy
When did the first visitation take place/what happened?
In 1559, 400 clergy men were dismissed however those who carried out the visitation had disrupted the churches by causing a destruction and Elizabeth did not want this.
this lead to visitation occurring every 3-4yrs after 1559
What did the visitation people look for?
license of teachers, midwives, surgeons as well as the church.
What was ACT OF UNIFORMITIY?
appearances of church and the form of services they held
