Why were the puritans challenging?
Puritan clergy men didn’t obey the religious settlement they didn’t want organ music but this would up set many people. The main challenges were over crucifixes and clothing but she had kept the crucifix in the Royal chapel
she couldn’t ignore them as there went other bishops to replace them.
What was the vestment controversy?
What they wore
some believed they should not have special clothing
some believed it should be plain and simple
HOWEVER elaborate vestment suggested that priests were set apart from ordinary people and they had the power to turn the bread and wine into blood and body of Christ they could also forgive sins but protestants did not believe his.

Puritans didn’t want crucifixes as they represented idols but Eliz wanted this as she didn’t want to upset her catholic subjects and she wanted the church to keep their familiar looks
but many puritans said no and they resigned Eliz couldn’t have this so she backed down

In 1556 the pope issued an instruction that they should not attend church of England services and even though there were penalties Elizabeth didn’t force this as she didn’t want martyrs

1562 a religious war broke out in France and Elizabeth was concerned about its potential to threaten her country by encouraging religious conflicts so she wrote to Phillip 2 in 1564 explaining how “troubled and perplexed she was”

What was the Dutch revolt/what year did it begin?
People who were catholic and protestant went against Spain it broke out in 1566 and in 1567 Phillip sent the Duke of Alba with an army of 10,000 men to the Netherlands to put down the revolt it had been defeated
Why was the council of troubles set up?
It was in the Netherlands to enforce Catholicism and obedience to the Spanish crown. It ignored local law and legal processes many Dutch protestants fled to exile, many in England
Who were the sea beggars/How did they help Elizabeth?
Sea beggars were the Dutch rebels fleeing by water they attacked Spain’s ship in the English channel that were carrying men and resources to Alba army. In 1567 Elizabeth allowed the sea beggars to shelter in England’s harbour

It was loan of money given by the Italian bank to Phillip 2 but Elizabeth took the money herself as it was a loan and it didn’t belong to Spain but to the Italians. This angered Spain because they needed to pay albas troops.
What was Elizabeth trying to achieve?
She was trying to protect England’s interest without going to war. She tried to make Spain task difficult so the Spanish force would leave and let the Dutch govern themselves
What were the causes of the catholic threat within England?
- In 1568 Mary queen of Scots fled to England she had a stronger claim to the crown
- Albas troop was meant to help the revolt of the northern earls but this did not happen but the rebellion cause Phillip 2 and the Pope to back further plots against Elizabeth.

Mathew Parker issued guidelines in his book of advertisement and he held a exhibition on how to wear vestments many agreed and despite oppositions they had to be worn
