Why was education important in Elizabethan England /Who attended school?
Because it prepared you for the life you were expected to lead
protestants believed you had to be literate so you could understand the bible
.Mainly boys went to school and a very few girls
Why could some people not be educated?
Because of their social hierarchy and in rural areas where farming was a way of life
Who were humanist and what did they believe?
humanist were thinks and writes
they believed learning was important in its own right not just for practical reasons
What were the nobility girls taught?
Latin history, government and theology
music dancing needle work horse riding and archery
What were the nobility boys taught?
Latin history, government and theology
horse riding archery, swimming,wrestling and fencing
Where were the nobility taught/when did they start they education?
They were home schooled
started their learning at the age of 7
What are the difference/similarities from nobility men and women when they got older?
they were sent to another noble household to finish their education
eldest son would inherit the farther title and learn how to become a noble men
Girls who went to another noble family would make useful social contacts and perfect those skills expected from them
Who attended grammar school?
Boys who largely came from the gentry,professionals or wealthy business owners
What did the middle class girls do?
They were home schooled by their mothers preparing them for married life and running a household
they didn’t attend grammar school but they could attend a dame school
How much did you have to pay for grammar school?
Fees varied on how much property the boys family owned HOWEVER if you were a low class and showed promise you could attend and the fees were paid by people who left money for the school to provide for education to those who couldn't afford it.
How long did the school day last for/How many holidays did they get?
6am-5pm
Christmas and Easter off
What did the school day consist of?
prayers recitation of previous lessons by heart Latin &Greek history, philosophy, poetry and literature grammar classical text
How did they monitor bad behaviour?
2 boys were chosen to monitor behaviour inside and outside school grounds as well as the streets
any behaviour reported was were questioned on Monday at 9am and punished.
What were the punishments?
Exclusion from school
Being kept in at break
corporal punishment
being on report
What curriculum did boys of merchants and craftsmen learn?
English
writing
Arithmetic
Geography
What did skilled craftsmen and yeomen do?
Grammar school were available
much of their education came from apprentices
education depended if the parents could afford it and if they could run the family business without them
HOWEVER some children left school at an early age to work or to become an apprentice
What were petty schools?
Schools that were set up and run by teachers in their home whose parent could afford it
curriculum; reading,writing and basic arithmetic
punishment was harsh and common
after attending petty school they would go grammar school
What were dame schools?
School for girl taught by local educated women
basic education
Did the labouring poor children go school?
No they did not get an education as they had to help the family
they would learn everything from their parents and would go and get jobs that didn’t require literacy of numeracy
How big of an impact did school have on Elizabethans?
30% men and 10% women in Elizabeth reign and women were more literate
compared to 1603 20% men and 10% women
men had a bigger impact then women because women were expected to marry not work outside the home
What did the university offer?
There was only 2 university oxford and Cambridge
they curriculum was geometry, philosophy Logic and rhetoric, medicine and law and divinity
What is the difference in sport played for nobility and gentry men/women?
hunting on horse backs-both hawking-both fishing-both fencing-men real tennis-men
What sports did the working people play?
foot ball
extremely violent-common for people to die
aim of the game was to get the ball into the other sides goal
no rules
What were spectators sports?
Watching sporting competitions (wrestling and tennis) depends on your class watching animals fight to death was also entertainment for ALL classes and people could gamble on the outcomes
