What was the Greensboro sit in?
1 Feb 1960 4 boys sat down at Greensboro lunch counter they then waited to be severed but because it was segregated the staff refused to serve them and told them to leave but they sat down until closing time.
What happened after the first day of the Greensboro sit in?
The next day about 25 students came and sat down at the lunch counter in shifts
word got around by newspaper by 4th February over 300 students came white black male and female
What did CORE and SCLC do to help the sit in?
They were asked to send people in to train students in non-violent protest tactics.
15 April Ella barker invited students to a meeting in Raleigh
What was SNCC?
Student non-violent Coordinating Committee
AIM: demonstrate peacefully and visibly, do not rise to provocation and show your opponent up as a violent oppressor and protest in a non-violent way
What is the significance of Greensboro?
Some white southerns joined CORE and SNCC even when threatened
media was open to everything
sit-ins showed importance of publicity
favourable news coverage produced support from black and white
Who were the “freedom riders”?
CORE activists who decided in 1961 to ride on the buses from the North to the Deep South to test if desegregation was still happening.
What happened on the 4 May 1961?
7 black and 6 white freedom riders left Washington on 2 diff buses.
Riders got as far to the border of Alabama where two riders were arrested
What happed in Anniston?
15 May 1961
1st bus reached Anniston over 100 KKK members surrounded around it slashing tyre
the bus left whilst being attacked
white policemen forced the doors to open and the passengers escaped just before the petrol tank exploded.
What happened to the riders on the first bus going to Anniston?
Fred Shuttleworth leader of ACMHR organised cars to take the riders to Birmingham airport.
What happened to the second bus going to Anniston?
they didn’t know what happened to the first bus so they went and ended up getting beaten
they got back on the bus and the ACMHR got the riders to the airport
Why was this embarrassing for the government?
this was embarrassing as press coverage of the attack was huge
and Birmingham chief of police “BULL CONOR” told police not to stop KKK members harassing the riders
What did the SNCC do after the freedom riders?
17 may ten riders took the bus from nashville,tennesse to Birmingham and waited as Birmingham bus station
publicity forced federal government to force governor John Patterson to get them safely to Montgomery .
What happened on 20 May 1961?
The police escorted them just outside Montgomery then left
kkk and wcc members were waiting for them and they beated them up
riders were arrested for starting a riot
What happened of the 24 May 1961?
Large police escort accompanied a bus with freedom riders gong from Montgomery-jackson
but when using the facilities they were arrested and government did not stop this.
What did the freedom riders achieve?
1 nov federal government said officers would enforce desegregation if states did not obey .
southern states desegregated and freedom riders ended
