A

1 Feb 1960 4 boys sat down at Greensboro lunch counter they then waited to be severed but because it was segregated the staff refused to serve them and told them to leave but they sat down until closing time.

A

The next day about 25 students came and sat down at the lunch counter in shifts
word got around by newspaper by 4th February over 300 students came white black male and female

A

A

CORE activists who decided in 1961 to ride on the buses from the North to the Deep South to test if desegregation was still happening.

A

A

15 May 1961
1st bus reached Anniston over 100 KKK members surrounded around it slashing tyre
the bus left whilst being attacked
white policemen forced the doors to open and the passengers escaped just before the petrol tank exploded.

Fred Shuttleworth leader of ACMHR organised cars to take the riders to Birmingham airport.

17 may ten riders took the bus from nashville,tennesse to Birmingham and waited as Birmingham bus station
publicity forced federal government to force governor John Patterson to get them safely to Montgomery .

A

Supreme court ordered the uni to admit him but uni officials disobeyed ruling by physically stopping him from registering

A

30 Sept Meredith tried to register again with 500 federal agents and with a mob of over 3000 people
kennedy ordered for calm but was ignored

A

shots broke out and marshals could only use tear gas which killed 2 civilians and 160 marshals were badly injured and 28 of them were shot
