A

A

A

an extreme white backlash began
black children who had previously integrated in white schools were the target and they were threatened

A

Many school boards said they would desegregate but they didn’t
Bryd of Virginia said he would close public schools that tried to desegregate
WCC(white citizen Council) set up in July 1954 and maintained segregation they used extreme violence

A

constant legal pressure for desegregation in the south also increased awareness of civil rights issues
deep south student and teachers were kept hostile and black children went to school everyday through mobs
Many black teachers lost their job

they faced violence and threats about losing their jobs

Police chief took the black students out of the school and blamed them

A

But troops could not stop the threat by whites students
the troops couldn’t guard black people home or hate mail

A

May 1958 school year ended and Faubus closed every school in Little rock for the next year but then white parent forced him and opened integrated schools in sept 1959

A

25 feb 1954 he demanded massive resistance but it then was ruled illegal in 1959 by state supreme court judges

A

drew up gradual plans
few black children in each year
segregated within the school but allowed black and whites to attend
desegregated one or two school rest were segregated
Made mobs outside this made them send black people home “for their own safety”
