cause of Cripps’ mission

A

with the Japanese army rapidly advancing towards India, it became necessary for the British to break the political deadlock in India. Churchill announced that Sir Stafford Cripps, a member of war cabinet, would go to India to consult all parties.

causes of failure of Cripps’ mission

A
  1. did not bring the promise of independence in the near future
  2. plan involved partition of country
  3. League opposed creation of a single union. They did not grant the right of self-determination to Muslims
  4. Hindu Mahasabha rejected it because it feared the partition of the country
  5. Sikhs, Anglo-indians, indian christians opposed it because they did not provide sufficient safeguard for their interests
  6. Princely states had no right to send their representative to the proposed constitution-making body, representatives were to be selected by rulers
  7. congress wanted that all Subjects, including Defence should be handed over to the National Government.

Japanese threat

A

The japanese had attacked Burma, and were marching towards Assam. This was a danger to the safety to India. Leaders were anxious to save their country from Japanese invasion but slavery was a hindrance. The solution was complete Independence from British rule

A

All-India Congress Committee met in Bombay on August 8, 1942, passed the Resolution adopted in Wardha in July.

Congress proposed to start a non-violent mass struggle under Gandhi’s leadership if this demand of swaraj was not met
