The prevention and treatment of diseases Flashcards
the function of white blood cells
white blood cells destroy the pathogens and they have a memory that the next time the same pathogens enter the body, it will recognise and destroy it before it can harm the body
What are the two main types of white blood cells
Phagocytes and Lymphocytes
Function of phagocytes
destroys the pathogens before they harm the body
Function of lymphocytes
they produce antibodies that destroy the pathogen
What do pathogens contain
they contain substances that stimulate the production of antibodies which are called antigens
How is natural immunity gained
when the mother’s antibodies are transmitted through the placenta or later in the mothers’ milk
How is immunity artificial
when an injection of a mild form of the disease stimulates the antibody production. The vaccine usually contains dead or harmless micro-organism
What is an immunity vaccination
causes the production of specific white blood cells in the cells of the body which give better protection against a second attack by the same antigen
Passive defence mechanism against plants
Physical barriers
- hair on the leaf surface prevents the penetration of pathogens
