Bryophytes Flashcards
1
Q
Habitat of moss
A
Moss grows in dense green patches on moist ground surfaces, tree bark, or between rocks
2
Q
Structure of moss
A
- grow a height of between 1cm and 3 cm
- do not have a vascular system because they lack xylem and phloem tissue
- they do not have true stems
- water is absorbed directly through all the planned tissue by osmosis
- do not have true roots or leaves
- ## roots are rhizoids, which absorb water directly from the soil by osmosis
3
Q
The ecological role of moss
A
Bryophytes are pioneer organisms. The moss plants grow in very little soil. The moss plants bind the soil particles and form organic material making the environment suitable for the establishment of lager plants
Moss layers on the soil help to limit water loss and erosion and it offers shelter to smaller members of the animal kingdom, such as mites
As autotrophic plants Bryophytes maintain the carbon dioxide/ oxygen balance of the environment
