Porifera and Cnidaria Flashcards
What does Phylum providers consist of
Primitive invertebrates, like sponges
What are phylum Porifera
They are pore bearing animals that occur in the oceans
They are sessile because they don’t have muscles and nerves and can therefore not search for food. Their bodies are therefore mainly adjusted to circulate water through their body cavities to capture the food particles that occur in the water
Body plan of sponges
They are asymmetrical because sponges do not have a level or a line of symmetry which divides them into two equal halves
They don’t have a common body plan and their body wall shapes vary from flat, tubular and vase- like to round, branches and leaf like
The Jody wall consists of three layers with many pores which allow water and food to enter the central cavity
Sponges don’t have a through gut because they only have one opening. It has acoelomate gut that is highly specialised for filter feeding
Phylum Cnidaria ( the whip- hair animals)
Animals that belong to the phylum cnidaria are called this because of the presence of structures, called cnidocytes.
What are Cnidaria
They are aquatic animals found mostly in the sea except for Hydra which lives in fresh water which is also known as Coelenterara
Coelenterata structure
- Are multicellular
- The body consists of a hollow cylinder which is called a coelenterates and it is surrounded by a body wall consisting of two layers (diploblastic) and endoderm on the outside
- The coelenterates contains water and serves as a hydrostatic skeleton supporting the animal
