Pteridophytes Flashcards
1
Q
Habitat of Pteridophytes
A
are found in many areas but especially in moist, shady places even though there are species that grow in full sun
2
Q
structure of pteriphytes
A
- have a well developed vascular system that consists of xylem and phloem
- the xylem conducts water and dissolved nutrients up and down the plant
- the xylem tracheids provide additional support to the leaves
- have an underground stem called a rhizome, which stores food for the plant
- the roots develop directly from the stem
- The compound leaves are called fonds and have a waterproof cuticle layer
- the leaves are multi pinnate meaning that the leaves are divided into leaflets
- leaves contain chlorophyll and are able to photosynthesis
- gaseous exchange takes place through the stomata
- Ferns have an adventitious root system that absorbs water and nutrients from the soil
- the roots anchor the plant firmly in the soil
3
Q
Ecological role of ferns
A
Ferns can grow in shady conditions and as a result form the ground cover under larger trees and shrubs. They prevent soil erosion and prevent water loss from the environment
