The organisation and specialisation of cells 6.4 Flashcards
what are the levels of organisation in multicellular organisms
what is meant by differentiation
The cells within a multicellular organism are differentiated, meaning they are specialised to carry out a very specific functions
what is meant by tissue
A tissue is made up of a collection of differentiated cells that have a specialised function or functions
As a result each tissue is adapted for a particular function within the organism
what are the 4 main categories of tissues in animals
-Nervous tissues, adapted to support the transmission of electrical impulses
-Epithelial tissue, adapted to cover body surfaces, internal and external
-Muscle tissue, adapted to contract
-Connective tissue, adapted either to hold other tissues together or as a transport medium
what is an example of epithelial tissue
what is an example of connective tissue
Give an example of epidermis tissue found in plants
Give an example of vascular tissue found in plants
what Is meant by an organ
An organ is a collection of tissues that are adapted to perform a particular function in an organisms
what is an example of an organ in a plant
leaves, they are adapted for photosynthesis and they contain both epidermis and vasuclar tissues
what is meant by organ system
An organ system is composed of a number of organs working together to carry out a major function in the body
what are some examples of organ systems
-The digestive system
-The cardiovascular system
-The gaseous exchange system
