the nervous system Flashcards
which body parts/organs are involved in the central nervous system?
brain and spinal cord
which body parts/organs are involved in the peripheral nervous system?
nerve cells that carry information to and from the central nervous system
how does the nervous system detect stimuli?
receptors are a group of specialised cells that detect a change in the environment and stimulate electrical impulses in response
structure of sensory neurons
dendrites, cell body - nucleus, organelles, cytoplasm, axon- carry messages up and down the body over long distances, dendrites - fingerlike projections, one or more dendrons
order of reflex arc
stimulus, receptor, sensory neuron, relay neuron, motor neuron, effector, response
what are the routes impulses to and from the brain?
the impulses cross from the nerve cell in the spinal cord to the opposite side of the spinal cord. the impulse is sent up the signal cord and through the brain stem to the thalamus
adaptations and functions of the sensory neuron
sends signals to the central nervous system about information received
-myelin sheath allows electrical impulses to transmit quickly along nervous cells
-long axon - allows messages to be sent up and down the body over long distances
