meiosis Flashcards
what is meiosis?
cell division in reproductive organs to halve the number of chromosomes
what are gametes and examples?
sex cells - egg and sperm cell
what is a haploid cell?
half the chromosomes of a normal cell - has 23 chromosomes
what is a diploid cell?
when egg and sperm cell joins - has 46 chromosomes
why do sex cells need to have 23 chromosomes?
to allow another gamete to combine to be a diploid cell (23+23(from each gamete)=46 chromosomes))
what is the process of meiosis?
a process where a single cell divides twice to produce 4 gamete cells containing half the original amount of genetic information
what is a genome?
the complete set of DNA (genetic material) in an organism
what is a gene?
a small section of DNA on a chromosome that codes for a particular sequence of amino acids to make a specific protein
what happens during the first stage of meiosis?
meiosis one separates pair of chromosomes and reduces diploid cells to a haploid
what happens during meiosis two?
meiosis two separates the sister chromatids and forms 4 new haploid gametes, each with one copy of each chromosome
where are genes found?
genes are found in chromosomes
