mitosis Flashcards
what is the order of the cell cycle and what happens during each one of them?
g1 - checks to enter the synthesis phase (gap)
S (synthesis) - DNA synthesis
G2 - checks and preparation for entering mitosis (gap)
M (mitosis)
what are the 3 things mitosis helps within living organisms?
growth, repair and asexual reproduction
what is g1, S and g2 part of?
interphase
what is growth in mitosis
formation of identical daughter cells
what is repairing in mitosis
repair damaged tissue and replace worn out cells
what is asexual reproduction in mitosis
replicate copies of parent cells
stages of mitosis in order
interphase,prophase,metaphase,anaphase,cytokinesis, telophase
how do cancer cells grow?
cell division goes wrong and cells grow out of control forming a tumour that may be cancerous and move around the body and spread
what happens during mitosis?
mitosis produces genetically identical diploid cells as the cell replicates its chromosomes and then divides the copied chromosomes equally to make sure the daughter cell has a full set
why might organisms rely on asexual reproduction?
- faster than sexual reproduction
- only requires one parent
- time and energy efficient
what happens during interphase?
chromosomes become more visible and DNA is copied
what happens during prophase?
cell consists of 2 chromatids
what happens during metaphase?
nuclear membrane breaks down and chromosomes line up In the middle of the cell
what happens during anaphase?
chromatids separate and one chromatid from each pair is pulled to each pole of the cell and the chromatids are now called chromosomes
what happens during cytokinesis?
the cell splits into 2
