how does blood flow through the heart?

A

blood comes into the right atrium from the body, moves into the right ventricle and is pushed into the pulmonary artery into the lungs. After picking up oxygen, the blood travels back to the heart through the pulmonary vein and left atrium to the left ventricle and out to the body tissues through the aorta

  • 2 sets of valves to prevent backflow of blood
  • muscular walls of the heart increase in thickness particularly in the left ventricle, providing a more powerful contraption
