neurotransmission speeds Flashcards
what are the structures and adaptations of a motor neuron?
soma-cell body where the nucleus lies and controls the cells and where proteins are produced for maintaining neuron function
dendrites - branch-like structures found at the end of neurons to send and receive information from other neurons
axon - a long structure from the soma which allows for the transmission of information down its body to the dendrites at the end of the neuron
adaptations of relay neuron
- long fibre (axon) to carry messages up and down the body over long distances
- fatty sheath to speed up nerve impulses along neuron
what is a synapse?
a synapse is the space between the end of a nerve cell and another cell
the function of the synapse
the synapse connects neurons and help transmit information from one neuron to the next
how does the structure of a reflex arc allow for faster responses?
they involve fewer pathways of travel and information from a reflex that does not need to travel to the brain
what is the structure and function of a reflex arc?
contains a receptor, an interneuron and an effector. sensory cells carry input from the receptor to a central interneuron which makes contact with a motor neuron
