The Muscular System Flashcards
The 12 voluntary muscles
Deltoid Pectoralis major Latissimus dorsi Biceps Triceps External obliques Gluteals Hip flexors Quadriceps Hamstrings Gastrocnemius Tibialis anterior
Latissimus dorsi
At the back of the body, either side of the chest
Triceps
At the back of each arm at the back.
Gluteals
In the middle of the body at the back for,ing the bottom
Voluntary muscles
Voluntary muscles are under your control, you can choose to contract or relax them.
Involuntary muscles
Involuntary muscles are not under our control. They contract and relax automatically controlled by the involuntary nervous system
Heart, internal organs
Cardiac muscle
Only found in the wall of the heart; it is a very specialised thpe of involuntary muscle. Cardiac muscle is made up of interlaced muscle
Antagonistic
The muscle that relaxes to allow the joint to,work
Agonist
The muscle that contracts to allow the joint to work
The 3 antagonistic pairs
Biceps and triceps
Quadriceps and hamstrings
Gastrocnemius and Tibialis anterior
Slow twitch fibres (type 1)
Dark in colour because of myoglobin and have good O2 supply
Fast twitch fibres (type 2A)
Lighter in colour because they don’t use O2 to make energy
manufacture and split ATP at a fast rate using aerobic and anaerobic metabolism; producing fast, strong muscle contraction.
More prone to fatigue than
