the medial pain system and limbic motor interactions Flashcards
what are the 5 primary functions of the medial pain system?
limbic/autonomic activation, learning and anticipation, nocifensive behavior, pain empathy, pain inhibition
when is pain tolerance higher?
in the morning
what is central sensitization ( allodynia)?
pain due to a stimulus that does not usually cause pain e.g.
when areas in the same dermatome as an injury are painful upon touch or normal things like having a collared shirt rub against it.
what are osteophytes?
AKA bone spurs they push on nerve roots and require surgical management
what is gabapentin?
it is a medicine that increases gaba and has the same effects of alcohol it serves as treatment for herniated disks
what is nociception?
SENSATION,
any process in the PNS or CNS assoc w/ a noxious or highly unpleasant stimulus
what is pain?
EMOTION
conscious experience assoc w/ noxious stimuli
pain has both ____ and ____ limbs
efferent ( determines how we react to stimuli) and afferent limbs
what does the direct anterior lateral pathway do?
mediares pain, temperature, simple tactile sensations
neurons of the origin of the neospinothalamic tract are found where?
in the laminae iv-vi of the dorsal horn
what does the indirect anterior lateral pathway do?
controls limbic, autonomic, endocrine, and motor components of pain, as well as the activation of pain inhibiting circuits
what is nocifensive behavior?
pain avoidance eg. moving hand off of a fire
chronic pain leads to ______ like conditioning of responses occur
LTP
