This is usually the case in older television series and family fiction.

They came up with the term visual ageism, the underrepresentation and misrepresenting them in a prejudiced way. Elderly age is often represented as undesirable with old people being seen as grumpy, poor and in ill health. There’s the third age elderly where they are represented as living in their golden age such as Jay from Modern Family and fourth age elderly where they are seen as incapacitated.

The elderly are overlooked by the media. They are rarely consulted as wise elders with information to pass on.
