Audiences: Media Violence Flashcards
What’s copycat crime?
An explanation for the effects of violent media, it has an immediate effect and creates copy cat crimes.
What’s an example of a copy cat crime in the UK?
James Bulger. The 10 year old killers saw the horror film a Child Play 3 and imitated a scene from it where the victim is splashed with blue paint. This caused a moral panic as there was a lot of press drawing links between the murder and the film.
What was the result of the survey commissioned by the Home Office into the copycat crime of James Bulger?
They failed to establish a clear link between violent videos and aggressive behaviors by youngsters. They instead suggest that there’s more of a pathway from having a violent home and offending behaviour to being more likely to prefer violent media. They also considered the case of Suzanne Capper who was murdered by people inspired by the Child Plays Films. They said that violent films as a dangerous role model to young people especially those predisposed to crime. There is some evidence that children do imitate crime but no firm evidence to the extent of copycat behaviour.
What is an example of a copy cat crime in the US?
The Columbine Highschool massacre, 12 people died and 24 were injured. The perpetrators committed suicide and they blamed their actions on violent video games and Marylin Manson.
What did Bandura say?
He showed 3 groups of children a film containing a Bobo Doll. In some the adults were being aggressive and some the adults were being nice. He found that those watching the aggressive behaviour copied them. He concluded that media content leads to copycat behaviour.
What did McCabe and Martin come up with?
They argue that the media has a disinhibition effect. It convinces children that in some situations the normal rules of society can be abandoned and instead we can resolve conflict with violence.
What did Newson come up with?
Desensitization., He believed that prolonged exposure to violence has a drip drip effect on young people desenscitatising them to violence socalising them into believing that its normal.
What is the Film Standards Agency?
They make sure that all films that are released are appropriate.
What would Feminists’ argue about violent media and its effects?
They would agree with the idea of a hypodermic syringe model, that the media portrays a certain image of women which encourages certain attitudes that promote and normalise violence towards women.
What does Buckingham argue about media violence?
Children are media literate and they know the difference between real and fictional violence.
What did Fesbach and Sanger come up with?
Catharsis. Screen violence is a safe outlet for people with violent tendencies. They found that those who saw aggressive behaviour on TV were less aggressive. This can be supported by the fact that not everyone who watches violent media becomes violent themselves.
What did Jack Young come up with?
Sensitisastion. Seeing the effects of violence, pain and suffering makes us more aware of the consequences of commiting offences so puts people off violence.
What does Gauntlett say?
He says this doesn’t consider the hawthorn effect in research. Most studies are conducted in artificial context so lack validity. Not clear on the definition of violence. Fails to put violence into context.
What did Cumberbatch say relating to media violence?
He looked into over 3000 studies on the subject and concluded that there is still no conclusive evidence that violence shown in the media changes peoples behaviour rather that the media violence has been subjected to a lynch mob mentality with almost any evidence used to prove guilt.
