What does Couldry argue?
The way that the media is run has lead to a lack of public trust in the media especially in young audiences as we are aware that there is a lack of objectivity in reporting.
What does Badikian argue?
The news is created in a way to avoid offending advertisers with stories watered down or killed off all together.

He says that to attract a higher number of consumers news stories need to appeal to everyone and offend noone.

The minority views aren’t represented in the media which leads to a less critical approach of reporting politics.

The news may not be successful in telling us what to think but they are successful in telling us what to think about.

Whats Gatekeeping?
The medias power to refuse to cover some things and let others through.

The news is not objective or impartial, stories that do not represent the dominant ideology or status quo are not reported.
What was wikileaks?
Julian Assange set up WikiLeaks in 2006, this is a non profit organization which has leaked classified information such as state affairs such as the war in Iraq or state crimes in Guantanamo bay
What’s norm setting?
The way that the media reinforces conformity to social norms and seek to isolate those who do not conform by making them targets for unfavourable media coverage. This is achieved by encouraging conformist behaviour such as not going on strike and discouraging non conformist behaviour such as exaggerating stories on riots or immigrants.
What did Herman and Chomsky argue?
The media participates in propaganda campaigns helpful to elite interests, There is solidarity between the media and the government as they hold the information sources. The media are also controlled by the conservative ideology and free market capitalism.
What did Stuart Hall argue?
The media supports capitalist interests because those in powerful positions have better access to media institutions. He came up with the hierarchy of credibility, journalists find police officers or business owners more credible than people like trade unions. There has been an increase in spin doctors.

Whats a moral panic?
The over reaction of the public to a perceived problem. For example, violent video games, immigration, metal music. Usually made worse by tabloid newspapers.
What did Cohen argue to do with moral panics?
They create pressure on the authoritys to control this behaviour/group such as the mods and rockers moral panic.
