The Lymphatic System (chpt. 27) Flashcards
What is the lymphatic system?
A one way system of lymph vessels containing a fluid called lymph
What is the function of the lymphatic system?
Return tissue fluid from around cells to the blood
Tissue fluid
Plasma without RBC or platelets
(Becomes lymph fluid once in lymph vessels)
How is tissue fluid returned to plasma
- through blood capillaries
- through dead-ending lymph vessels
Lymph
Made of tissue fluid with lymphocytes, protein and lipids
No RBC
How does lymph move through lymph vessels
Using muscles, valves ensure correct movement
How is lymph returned to the blood
Through the subclavian vein
Lymph nodes
Swellings found along lymph vessels, especially in groin and armpits
Function of lymph nodes
- store lymphocytes (WBC) which produce antibodies and kill microorganisms
- filter bacteria
Functions of the lymphatic system
- DRAINAGE - collect excess tissue fluid and return it to blood
- DEFENCE - contains lymphocytes which help fight infection
- TRANSPORT - transport fat
Oedema
The swelling of the body due to too much tissue fluid
Two ways lymph differs from blood
- no RBC
- no platelets
- no mitochondria
- no clotting proteins
In what way do lymph vessels and veins have a similar structure?
Thin walls - blood not under high pressure in vein, allows for easy diffusion of tissue fluid into lymph vessels
Valves - prevent backflow of liquid in both
