The Lymphatic System Flashcards
What is tissue fluid?
The solution surrounding cells. It’s composition is similar to plasma, but without red blood cells, white blood cells, platelets and large proteins (which stay in the capillaries.
Various locations of Lymph Nodes
Tonsils, Spleen, Neck, Groin and Armpits
How does lymph move?
Contraction of skeletal muscles squeeze the lymph vessels and push lymph along. There is no pump.
What stop the back flow of lymph?
Semi-lunar valves.
Functions of the lymphatic system? (3)
1) Drains excess tissue fluid and returns it to the blood.
2) Transports fats (lipids) and fat-soluble vitamins (these are absorbed into lacteals in the small intestine)
3) Defends the body against disease
What does the plasma contain?
Red and white blood cells, proteins and dissolved nutrients, wastes.
What is serum?
This is blood plasma minus blood clotting proteins. It is used in hospitals for blood transfusions.
What is plasma?
The liquid part of blood.
What does lymph not contain?
Red blood cells, platelets and large proteins.
What is lymph?
The solution inside lymph vessels. It’s composition is similar to tissue fluid, but with white blood cells (lymphocytes) that nature in lymph nodes and more fats (absorbed from the digestive system).
