The Blood Vessels Flashcards
Two types of double circulatory systems
Pulmonary circuit
Systemic circuit
Advantages of a double circulation
More efficient: oxygenated and deoxygenated blood are separate
Blood pressure is high so blood can get to all parts of the body
Function of arteries
Carries blood away from the heart
Function of veins
Carries blood to the heart
Function of capillaries
Allow substances to pass in and out of the blood
What is the lumen?
The lumen is the space in the centre of a blood vessel through which blood flows
What in the collagen and it’s function (veins and arteries)
(A protein): in elastic strong outer layer
Provides strength and prevents over-expansion
What is the muscle in arteries and veins and what is the function
And elastic middle layer
Can stretch and allows the width of the vessel to increase
What is the endothelium and it’s function
A smooth inner layer
Reduces friction and so allows blood to flow easier
Is the blood pressure in arteries high or low?
High
Is the blood pressure in veins high or low?
Low
Narrow or wide lumen in arteries?
Narrow
Narrow or wide lumen in veins?
Wide
Thick or thin muscular wall in arteries?
Thick muscular wall
Thick or thin muscular wall in veins?
Thin muscular wall
