Plant Structure (External) Flashcards
Function of flowers
Responsible for sexual reproduction
Functions of fruit
1) protect seeds
2) Aid dispersal of seeds
Types of roots
- Tap Roots
- Fibrous Roots
What are Tap Roots found in
Dicot e.g. Dandelion
Where are Fibrous roots found
Monocots e.g. grass and daffodils
What allows to root to grow downwards
The meristem
Where is the meristem found
The tip of the root
Functions of the roots
1) anchors the plant in the soil
2) absorbs water and minerals from the soil through its root hairs
3) Store food and some plants (e.g. carrots and turnips)
4) asexual reproduction example root “tuber” e.g. dahlia
Function of the stem
1) support the aerial parts of the plant
2) transport water and minerals up from the roots to the leaves in xylem tubes
3) Transport food up or down between the leaves and roots in phloem tubes
What is a herbaceous plant
A plant with no wood
What is an internode
And internode is the part of the stand between two nodes
What are lenticels
There are openings for gas exchange found in stems of plants
What is this stalk of a leaf called
Petioles
What is the flat part of a leaf called
Blade or lamina
Function of Leeds
1) photosynthesis using sunlight energy
2) Exchange gases with the atmosphere through the stomata
3) Store food
4) transpiration
5) asexual reproduction
