The Heart Cont. Flashcards
Fetal by-pass structures
Ductus venosus
Ductus arteriosus
Foramen ovale
Umbilical Arteries
Carry less oxygenated blood from the fetus to the placental circulation for oxygenation and waste elimination
Umbilical Veins
Carry oxygen and nutrient-rich blood from the placenta to the fetus
Ductus Venosus
Connects umbilical vein with caudal vena cava
Blood bypasses the liver
Adult structure - ligamentum venosum
Foramen Ovale
Shunts blood from the right atrium to the left atrium
Blood bypasses the pulmonic circulation
Adult structure - fossa ovalis
Ductus Arteriosus
Shunts blood from the pulmonary trunk to the aorta
Blood bypasses the pulmonic circulation
Adult structure - ligamentum arteriosum
PDA
Patent Ductus Arteriosus; condition in which the ductus arteriosus remains open after birth. In some cases allows poorly oxygenated blood to flow in the wrong direction
