The Heart Flashcards
1
Q
how many chambers is the heart divided into?
A
four
2
Q
what are features of the two atria?
A
- top of the heart
- thin muscular walls
3
Q
what are features of the two ventricles?
A
- below the atria
- thicker muscular wall
4
Q
what separates the left and right sides of the heart?
A
the septum
5
Q
what side of the heart pumps deoxygenated blood to the lungs?
A
the right side
6
Q
what side of the heart pumps oxygenated blood to the body?
A
the left side
7
Q
why is the left ventricle wall thicker than the right ventricle wall?
A
it allows it to pump blood at higher pressures so that the blood can travel around the whole body
8
Q
how does the heart pump blood?
A
- the two sides of the heart contract and relax at the same time to pump blood
- the atria contract, emptying blood into the ventricles
- the ventricles then contract, pushing blood into the arteries
- valves close to ensure blood flows in the correct direction
