Aerobic Respiration Flashcards
1
Q
what is aerobic respiration?
A
the process of breaking down food molecules to release ATP - it is a series of chemical reactions
2
Q
examples of uses of energy?
A
- cell division
- building large molecules, such as proteins
- contraction of muscle cells, producing movement
- transporting molecules (e.g. active transport)
- maintaining body temperature (birds and mammals)
3
Q
what is aerobic respiration?
A
aerobic respiration uses oxygen to break down glucose and release energy, some energy is released as heat, but most is trapped in a usable form of ATP
4
Q
what respires aerobically?
A
all animals and plants and many other organisms
5
Q
word equation for aerobic respiration?
A
glucose + oxygen -> carbon dioxide + water
6
Q
symbol equation for aerobic respiration?
A
C6H12O6 + 6O2 -> 6CO2 + 6H2O
