the hand Flashcards
carpal tunnel syndrome: describe the position and function of the retinacula of the wrist and the tendon sheaths of the wrist and hand in order to explain carpal tunnel syndrome and the spread of infection in tendon sheaths
what does the carpal tunnel give passage to from forearm into hand
median nerve, tendon of flexor pollicis longus, four tendons of flexor digitorum profundus, four tendons of flexor digitorum superficialis
what is the carpal tunnel base formed by
bony arch of carpal bones (palpable bony margins are tubercles of scaphoid and trapezoid bones laterally, and pisiform and hamate (hook) bones medially - forms a gutter shape and attachment for flexor retinaculum)
what is the roof of the carpal tunnel formed by
flexor retinaculum (transverse carpal ligament)
what does carpal tunnel syndrome result from
compression of median nerve in carpal tunnel, resulting in tingling, loss of sensation and pain in hand
what median nerve branch doesn’t pass through carpal tunnel (lies anterior to flexor retinaculum), and so isn’t affected
palmar cutaneous branch of median nerve
