elbow, forearm and wrist Flashcards
elbow joint: describe the anatomy of the elbow joint; demonstrate the movements of flexion and extension; identify the muscles responsible for these movements; list the main attachments and nerve supply of these muscles
elbow type of joint
synovial hinge joint
where is the elbow joint between
humerus proximally and ulna and radius distally
where does the distal humerus articulate with the ulna
at trochlea (medial condyle)
where does distal humerus articulate with the radius, and significance
at capitulum (lateral condyle), but only in full flexion
3 ligaments which contribute to elbow joint stability and allow pronation and supination or radio-ulnar joints
medial (ulnar) collateral ligament, lateral (radial) collateral ligament, annular ligament (part of proximal radio-ulnar joint)
2 movements of elbow joint
flexion, extension
4 flexors of elbow joint and nerve spinal levels
brachialis, biceps brachii, brachioradialis, assistance from pronator teres; C5,6
2 extensors of elbow joint and nerve spinal levels
triceps brachii, anconeus; C6,7
define carrying angle, and what this usually is
deviation (abduction) of long axis of radius and ulna from that of humerus in extension (larger in women, but usually 5-15 degrees)
what bursa lies at the posterior of the elbow and frequently becomes inflamed
olecranon bursa
