the cardiac cycle Flashcards
- late diastole
both sets of chambers are relaxed and ventricles fill pasively
- atrial systole
atrial contraction forces a small amount of blood into ventricles
- isovolumic ventricular contraction
first phase of ventricular contraction pushes AV valves closed
doesn’t create enough pressure to open semilunar valves
- ventricular ejection
as ventricular pressure rises and exceeds pressure in arteries, the semilunar valves open and blood is ejected
- isovolumic ventricular relaxation
as ventricles relax, pressure in ventricles fall. blood flows back into cusps of semilunar valves and snaps them closed
ejection fraction
stroke volume/EDV
stroke volume
EDV - ESV
a wave
atrial contraction
c wave
rapid increase in pressure (ventricular contraction causing mitral valve to shut which stops when aortic valve opens)
v wave
blood flows back into atrium and mitral valve shut to pressure gradually increases until valve opens
