pericardial effusion Flashcards
1
Q
what
A
excess fluid collects within pericardial sac
can be acute or chronic
2
Q
effusion can be made of…
A
transudates exudates (assoc w inflammation) blood pus gas
3
Q
how does this effect heart
A
makes it harder for it to expand in diastole –> reduce CO
4
Q
pericardial tamponade
A
pericardial effusion iis large enough to raise intra-pericardial pressure
reduced filling of heart during diastole and reduced CO
emergency
5
Q
causes
A
congestive HF pulm htn infection autoimmune/inflammatory: SLE, RA injury - MI, surgery uraemia 2ry to renal failure cancer trauma aortic dissection
6
Q
presentation
A
chest pain SOB full feeling in chest orthopnoea quiet heart sounds hypotension raised JVP
fever + pericardial rub with pericarditis
7
Q
diagnosis
A
ECHO
fluid analysi s
8
Q
components of Mx
A
treat underlyig cause e.g. infection
drainage of effusion where required
9
Q
Mx - inflammatory causes can be treated with
A
aspirin
NSAIDs
colchicine
steroids
10
Q
options for draining effusion
A
needle pericadiocentesis
surgical drainage
