tetracyclines Flashcards
what is the major subclass
protein synthesis inhibitors
what is the mechanism
passive diffusion through porins in gram (-) organism binds to the 30s ribosomal subunit and inhibits protein synthesis
what are the resistances to these
efflux pumps, ribosomal protection through dissociation from binding sites.
spectrum
atypical organisms, spirochetes (borrelia), gram (+) (pneurmoniae, CA-MRSA), gram (-) (h flu, neisseria, rickettsia)
clinical uses
uncompl. respiratory infections (bronchitis, sinusitis, CAP), tick born illnesses, h. pylori.
adverse effects
GI, photosensivity, discoloration of the teeth of children (dose related), pill esophagitis (take with water and stand up),
what are the interactionsq
chelate cations in multivitamins, ca, iron, antacids. separate by a few hours.
what are the agents?
doxycycline, minocycline, tetracycline
