What is testicular torsion?
Twisting of the spermatic cord cutting off blood supply to the testes
Who does testicular torsion normally affect?
Young males
How long is there before irreversible ischaemia occurs?
6 hours
How does testicular torsion present?
- Pain is severe and sudden
- Red and swollen testis
- Loss of the cremasteric reflex
- Nausea and vomiting
- Fever
- Retracted testicle
What is there a loss of with testicular tosion?
Loss of the cremasteric reflex
Does elevation help testicular torsion?
No- negative phren’s sign
When does testicular torsion normally occur?
Comes on during exercise
How is testicular torsion diagnosed?
- Surgical scrotal exploration
- Doppler ultrasound
- Loss of cremasteric reflex
What is the management of testicular torsion?
Immediate surgical intervention to detort testes
Fix both as bell clap is often bilateral
What is the main complication of of testicular torsion?
Infertility
What is bell clap deformity?
Fixation of testes to tunica vaginalis is absent
What does bell clap deformity cause?
As it rotates it twists the vessels-cutting off blood supply
