Inflammation and/or infection of the prostate gland.
What is prostatitis due to?
Gram-negative bacteria entering the prostate gland via the urethra.
What is the most commonly isoltaed organism in prostatitis?
Escherichia coli
What are the 2 types of prostatitis?
Acute
Chronic
What is acute prostatitis?
Acute onset, due to a bacterial infection
Often accompanied with systemic upset
What is chronic prostatitis?
Recurrent or persistent prostatitis
Often caused by bacterial infection with e.g. E.Coli
What are the main RF for acute bacterial prostatitis?
Recent urinary tract infection
Urogenital instrumentation
Iintermittent bladder catheterisation
Recent prostate biopsy.
What are the main features of prostatitis?
Referred pain
obstructive voiding symptoms
fever and rigors
DRE: tender, boggy prostate gland
