Terms/ Histology/ Mitosis + Meiosis Flashcards
Sagittal section:
A cut along the median plane, symmetrical cut
Frontal section:
A cut along the coronal plane, divides body into anterior and posterior portions
Cross-section:
A cut through the transverse plane, divides the body into upper and lower portions
Anatomic position:
Body is erect
Feet are slightly apart
Head is held high
Palms of the hands are facing forwards
Superior:
Above
Inferior:
Below
Anterior:
Facing forward
Posterior:
Toward the back
Medial:
Toward the midline
Lateral:
Away from the midline or towards the sides
Proximal:
Closer to the point of attachment
Distal:
Farther away from the point of attachment
Dorsal cavity includes:
Cranial and spinal cavities
Ventral cavity includes:
Orbits and the nasal, oral, thoracic, and abdominopelvic cavities
Histology:
Study of tissues
Tissues:
Group of cells that act together to perform specific functions
4 fundamental tissues:
Epithelial, connective, muscle, and nerve
Epithelial cells:
Cover, line, and protect the body and its internal organs
Connective tissue:
Framework of the body that provides support and structure for the organs
-Composed of collagen, elastin, reticulum
Nerve tissue:
Composed of neurons and connective tissue cells that are called neuroglia
Muscle tissue:
Have the ability to contract or shorten
Types of muscle tissue
_________
Voluntary and involuntary:
Voluntary: skeletal muscles
Involuntary: smooth muscle and cardiac muscle tissue
Nucleus:
Contains deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA)
Mitosis:
DNA is duplicated and distributed evenly to two daughter cells
Meiosis:
The chromosome number is reduced from 46 to 23, so when the egg and sperm unite in fertilization, the zygote will have the correct number of chromosomes
Meiosis takes place:
In the ovaries and testes
If you wanted to separate the abdominal cavity from the thoracic cavity, which plane would you use?
Transverse
Squamous:
Cuboidal:
Columnar:
Flat
Cubed
Column
Stratified:
Composed of multiple layers of cells
Pseudostratified:
Appears to be stratified by only has 1 layer of cells
