Skin Flashcards
Skin consists of 2 layers:
Epidermis
Dermis
Epidermis:
Outer most protective layer made of dead, keratinized epithelial cells
Dermis:
The underlying layer of connective tissue composed of blood vessels, sensory nerve endings, hair follicles, and glands
Layers of epidermis from outer to inner:
Stratum corneum Stratum lucidum Stratum granulosum Stratum spinosum Stratum basale
Melanin:
Epithelial cells contain this protein pigment which protects against radiation from the sun
Where does mitosis occur?
Stratum basale
Eccrine sweat glands:
Regulate body temperature by releasing a watery secretion (sweat) that evaporates from the surface of the skin
Apocrine sweat glands:
Contains bits of cytoplasm from the secreting cells. The cell’s debris attracts bacteria, which causes body odor
Where are apocrine sweat glands found?
In the armpits and groin area
Sebaceous glands:
Release an oily secretion (sebum) through the hair follicles that lubricates the skin and prevents drying
Sebum:
Produced by holocrine secretion
Appendages of the skin:
Hair and nails- both composed of keratin
The epidermis is classified as:
Tissue
You have been given a sample of tissue that has pillar-shaped cells arranged tightly together, the tissue you have is:
Columnar epithelium
Stem cells of the epidermis:
Keratinocytes of the stratum basale
