Respiratory System Flashcards
Respiratory system consists of:
Nose Pharynx Larynx Trachea Bronchi Lungs w/ their alveoli Diaphragm Muscles surrounding ribs
External respiration:
Exchange of gases between the atmosphere and the blood through the alveoli
Internal respiration:
Exchange of gases between the blood and the body cells
Function of respiratory system:
To supply oxygen to the body and eliminate carbon dioxide
Upper passageways of the respiratory system serve to:
Warm, filter, and moisten incoming air
Upper respiratory tubules are lined with:
Cilia that help to trap debris and keep foreign substances from entering the lungs
Inhalation:
Contraction of the diaphragm to enlarge the thoracic cavity and draw air into the lungs
Regulator of blood pH:
Carbon dioxide
Exhalation:
Lungs recoil as respiratory muscles relax and thorax decreases in size
Nose is:
The first body part of air intake/removal of CO2
Pharynx consists of:
Nasopharynx, oropharynx, laryngopharynx
Larynx consists of:
Epiglottis (prevents food from entering), thyroid cartilage/Adam’s apple, cricoid cartilage
Alveoli:
Microscopic sacs where gas exchange occurs
