aka the Native American Party. Against the “alien menace” mainly Roman Catholics
Ostend Manifesto
Document from Belgium making a case for the US to take Cuba by force. This was leaked, and many people became outraged and viewed it as a conspiracy to get another slave state in the Union
Freeport Doctrine
Stated that exclusion of slavery in a territory (where it was legal) could be determined by the refusal of the voters to enact any laws that would protect slave property. Stated by Stephen Douglass during the Lincoln-Douglass debates, eventually led to his loss in the 1860 presidential election
John Brown
Antislavery zealot; murdered 5 proslavery Kansas settlers in cold blood; hanged for treason for Harpers Ferry raid
First Battle of Bull Run
McDowell (Union officer) almost won, but hours in the heat coupled with Confederate counter attack led to a confused retreat of the Union and a confused victory for the Confederates. The battle was a severe blow to Union morale and to the president’s confidence in his officers. It also showed that the war would not easily be ended
Homestead Act
Permitted any citizen to claim 160 acres of public land and to purchase it for a small fee after living/bettering it for 5 years. In order to promote economic development

Economy of the South which was dominated by planters. Very weak industry and weak consumerism due to the large number of poor whites and slaves
Battle of Antietam
September 17, 1862. It was the first battle of the Civil War fought on Northern soil. It was the single bloodiest day with 23,000 casualties. Virtual draw, but technically a Union victory. Resulted in the Emancipation Proclamation
Proclamation of Amnesty and Reconstruction
(Dec. 1863) issued by Lincoln: offered full pardon to Southerners who would take oath of allegiance to the Union and acknowledge emancipation
Wade-Davis Bill
50% of conquered population had to pledge “Ironclad Oath” to the Union. The new state constitution would have to abolish slavery, disenfranchise Confederate civil and military leaders, and repudate debts accumulated by the stated gov’t during the war. They could vote on political rights of blacks. Lincoln pocket veto
