Great Awakening
A sudden outbreak of religious fervor that swept through the colonies. One of the first events to unify the colonies. Spread by Johnathon Edwards, Westly Bros., and John Whitfield.
Albany Congress
Meeting of seven colonies in NY in response to French Indian War. Organized by Ben Franklin, must unite against France or as good as a chopped up snake.
French and Indian War
Part of Seven Years War. French and some Indians vs Colonies, British and Iroquois. Over Ohio Valley. British techniques: British commanders, impressment, seizure of anything needed. Resulted in Louisiana going to Spain, France ceded land to Britain, and increased taxes on colonials.
Writs of Assistance
Acts which colonists had to house British soldiers and enforced the Navigation Acts.
Stamp Act
An act passed by the British Parliment in 1756 that raised revenue from the American colonies by a duty in the form of a stamp required on all newspapers and legal or commercial documents, infuriated the colonies
Townshend Acts
Named for Charles Townshend: Quartering Acts, In/External Acts, Revenue and Suspension Acts. Dissembled NY assembly, taxes on Pb, paint, paper, and tea.
Tea Act
Allowed East India Company to ignore Nav Acts when exporting tea to colonies and gave them power to monopolize tea trade; this angered colonists and threatened merchants and the colonial economy.
Common Sense
A pamphlet written by Thomas Paine. Colonies should break from British rule and make government of Enlightenment ideals. Social contract
Second Continental Congress
Met in state house in Philadelphia. Agreed to support war but not on its purpose. “Olive Branch Petition”. “Declaration of the Cause and Necessity of Taking up Arms.”
Saratoga
John Burgoyne (British) vs. Horatio Gates (US). British surrender October, 17 1777. Inspired French aid.
