Liberal Republicans
Reform-minded citizens that banded together to form the Liberal Republican Party out of disgust towards President Grant. They wanted to purify Washingtons administration as well as end military reconstruction

Led by Roscoe Conkling of New York. Favored traditional, professional machine politics
Pendelton Civil Service Act
First civil service measure. Required that some federal jobs be filled by competitive written exams rather than patronage. Ironic because Arthur gained position through Spoils System
The New South
A vision for a self-sufficient southern economy built on modern capitalist values, industrial growth, and improved transportation. Henry Grady, the editor of the Atlanta Constitution, spread the gospel of the ______ with editorials for economic diversity and laissez-faire capitalism.
Social Darwinism
This was a belief held by many that stated that the rich were rich and the poor were poor due to natural selection in society. This was the basis of many people who promoted a laissez fairee style of economy.
Horizontal Integration
A technique used by John D. Rockefeller. An act of joining or consolidating with ones competitors to create a monopoly. Rockefeller was excellent with using this technique to monopolize certain markets. It is responsible for the majority of his wealth.
Horatio Alger
Promoter of the success story. Originally a minister, but driven from pulpit due to sex scandal. Moved to NY and wrote stories about a poor boy from a small town who went to the big city to seek fortune and gained it through hard work, perseverance, and luck
Cult of Domesticity
A widespread cultural creed that glorified the customary functions of the homemaker. Married women held immense power in being able to control the morals of a household.
Frank Lloyd Wright
Considered America’s greatest architect. Pioneered the concept that a building should blend into and harmonize with its surroundings rather than following classical designs.
Knights of Labor
Formed by Uriah Stevens, expanded by Terrence Powderly. Membership to anyone not “harmful”: lawyers, saloon keepers, gamblers, and bankers. Goals: equal pay, temperance, child labor laws, 8hr work day, health/safety laws, gov’t ownership of RR, telephones/graphs. Failures: Haymarket Square, Black listing
