Federal Naturalization Law (1790)
Nat’l citizenship for “free white persons” of “good moral character.” Citizenship can be passed through the father.
Hamilton’s Reports
Plan to spur Americans manufacturing with a tax on imports.
3 reports: vision of early republic. Each state paying foreign debt at par. South almost payed off, but North not close. Fed gov’t would assume debt and tax. South pissed and Madison helped to defeat plan. Jefferson’s compromise: move capital more south Potomac R. Washington D.C.
Jay’s Treaty with Britain
Signed by Lord Genville. Failed to get GB to pay for ships/cargo. Established undisturbed US sovereignty over entire NW. Prevented war with GB and established commercial relationship. Very unpopular.
Pinckney Treaty
Spain recognized the right of Americans to navigate the Miss R. Agreed to fix boundary of FA by US means (31st parallel). Control of Indian attacks on FA boarder. Free use of New Orleans for 3 years. Very popular.
Whiskey Rebellion (1794)
Farmers of western PA refused to pay excise tax on whiskey and harassed tax collectors. Hamilton urged Washington to crush uprising with 15,000 militiamen (couldn’t be done under Articles).
XYZ Affair
Because of French disrespect of US bipartisan. Created outrage toward France and caused undeclared war.
Election of 1800
Election between Adams and Jefferson. Deadlock: Burr vs Jefferson. Hamilton persuaded House of Reps to vote for Jefferson.
Alien and Sedition Acts
Also called the Federalist Acts. During Adams’ term. President can deport dangerous aliens. If you speak out against the President/Gov’t/Adams you could go to jail.
Kentucky and Virginia Resolutions
KY and VA would not adhere to the Alien and Sedition Acts. (b/c T.J.).
Marbury vs. Madison
Madison did not deliver a commission to Marbury. Marbury sued. Supreme Court said they could not force Madison to give Marbury his commission. Gave the Judicial branch the power of Judicial Review.
