General Court
Massachusetts’ first judicial, legislative, and administrative body. First time in which Puritans moved court from England to the colonies.
John Winthrop
English Puritan leading founder of Massachusetts Bay Colony. First major colony in New England after Plymouth. “City upon the hill”
Restoration Colonies
Proprieties granted to those who helped Charles II gain throne. Carolinas, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Georgia
Leisler’s Rebellion
After Glorious Revolution militia from France sent to NY. Leisler wanted more power and denied King William and is executed.
Quaker
Religious Society of Friends. Based in Pennsylvania. Trembled in the word of the Lord. Stuck to original church and tried converting others.
Navigation Acts
- Only British ships could import/export goods to/from colonies
- Only British citizens could trade with colonies
- Commodities such as sugar, tobacco, and cotton wool could only be exported to British ports
Half-Way Covenant
allowed partial membership rights to persons not yet converted into the Puritan church; It lessened the difference between the “elect” members of the church from the regular members; Women soon made up a larger portion of Puritan congregations.
Dominion of New England
Consolidation of New England. Governed by Sir Edmond Andros. Widely unpopular. Lasted 3 years until William and Mary converted to previous government.
Bacon’s Rebellion
Uprising in VA of backwater farmers whom rebelled against gov of Jamestown. Rebelled because gov’t was friendly toward attacking natives. Two attempts burned Jamestown the second time and died.
Enlightenment
Philosophical movement toward belief in human reasoning and renovations in politics, religion, and education: gov’ts free from tyranny, religious freedom, and interest in science.
