A

Two Confederate diplomats had slipped through the ineffective Union blockade to Havana, Cube, where the boarded an English steamer, the Trent, for Cuba. American frigate, San Jacinto, captained by Charles Wilkes was waiting there. Without authorization, Wilkes boarded the ship and arrested the diplomats. England wanted their freedom and apology or war

Military Reconstruction Act

A

Response to that lack of ratification of the 14th Amendment. Divides South into 5 military districts (except for Tennessee).
Union general would be at the head of each district. In order for the states to be readmitted, the state majority must swear allegiance to the Union and each Southern state must produce a new constitution in which they ratified the 14th amendment and gave black men voting rights. Marshall Law was implemented.

Boss Tweed was head of Tammany Hall in NYC’s Democratic political machine. Construction project took $13 mil when it only costs $3 mil. Thomas Nast, a political cartoonist, aroused public outrage. Tweed sentenced to 12 yrs, reduced to 1 yr, but got arrested again. Fled to Spain
