Louisiana Purchase
Napoleon, who needed money for Euro wars, offered the Louisiana Territory for $15 million. During Haitian Revolution. Less than 3 cents an acre. Jefferson did not know if it was constitutional. Gave president the power to make treaties.
Lewis and Clark Expedition
Exploration of the Pacific. Sacajawea, a Shoshone Indian served as their guide.
Yazoo Land Claims
Fraud perpetrated by several Georgia governors and the state legislature from 1795 to 1803 by selling large tracts of land to insiders at low prices. The lands were to be the states of Alabama and Mississippi later on and it was the first state law repealed by the Supreme Court.
Chesapeake-Leopard Affair
England was impressing American sailors. In retaliation, Jefferson passed the Embargo Act.
Embargo of 1807
In retaliation to British impression of US ships and crews. Unpopular because it hurt the export economy. Was replaced by the Non-intercourse Act which only pertained to France and Britain.
Tecumseh
Brother of the Prophet and chief of the Shawnees. Tried to unite Indians against the whites in the War of 1812.
Treaty of Ghent
Ended the war of 1812. US gave up trying to get CAN and got other small lands instead. Britain busy with Napoleon.
“American System”
Henry Clay. Tariff of 1816, second bank of the US, and national road. Benefited all but South
Hartford Convention
North East against war threatened to secede. Led by Danial Webster. No affect because Jackson’s victory at Florida
Rush-Bagot Treaty
The Treaty demilitarized the Great Lakes and Lake Champlain, where many British naval armaments and forts still remained, and laid the basis for a demilitarized boundary between the US and British North America
