Treaty of Paris (1783)
Marked end of Revolutionary War. Established recognition of US independence. US got land south of CAN and north of FA and from Atlantic to Mississippi R. Signed by John Adams, John Jay, and Ben Franklin. Spain got FA and French land secretly ceded to Spain
Articles of Confederation
Weak gov’t. Congress was the central institution of nat’l gov’t. First nat’l const. Power was invested in individual states. No taxes, weak executive, and no judicial. Unicameral congress needed unanimous vote.
Newburgh Conspiracy
Defection of Gen. Benedict Arnold. Shock because he was an early war hero. Defected because he felt the US cause was hopeless. Failed, fled to British camps.
Northwest Ordinance
Law which provided the method fro creating states within the NW territory. No slavery (until voted upon) and freedom of religion. Population 60,000 for statehood.
Shay’s Rebellion
Daniel Shay. Revolutionary war veterans pissed because they did not receive compensation and wanted tax relief. Went to Springfield to get weapons.
Constitutional Congress
Took place in Philadelphia State House. Virginia Plan- 2 houses with one based on population.
Great Compromise-Senate(2 reps per state) House of Representatives(based on pop)
Federalist Papers
Series of essays written by Hamilton(51), Madison(29), and Jay(5) published in the US. Explained meaning and virtues of the Constitution and argued against Anti-Federalists
Anti-Federalists
Opposed ratification of the Const. Defenders of Revolutionary America and mistrusted humans with power. Called for Bill of Rights. Wrote essays under pen names to counter Fed papers.
Bill of Rights
First ten amendments to the Constitution. First 9 put limitations on Congress forbidding it to infringe on basic human rights. The tenth gave all powers to the states except those withheld to them or delegated to the fed gov’t.
Judiciary Act of 1789
Created a Judicial Branch. 13 district courts with one judge each, 3 circuit courts of appeals, and 1 court justice. Judicial power invested in the Supreme Court: 6 members (even #). Edmund Randolph Office of Attorney
