Former Gov of Louisiana. Attacked opponents until they had no political power. Super progressive who supported FDR. He proposed the Share-Our-Wealth Society as opposed to the New Deal
Good Neighbor Policy
withdrawal of American troops from foreign nations (especially Latin America) to improve international relations and unite western hemisphere; Clark Memorandum (rebukes the “big stick”); peaceful resolution of Mexican oil fields
John Maynard Keynes
A British economist who created Keynsian Economics: by varying the flow of gov’t spending and taxation (fiscal policy) and managing the supply of currency (monetary policy), the gov’t could stimulate the economy to cure recession and dampen the growth of inflation
Social Security Act
The greatest victory for New Dealers; created pension and insurance for the old-aged, the blind, the physically handicapped, delinquent children, and other dependents by taxing employees and employers
Indian Reorganization Act
Promoted by Collier and allowed Indians to live in traditional ways, collective ownership of land
The Neutrality Acts of 1935
Designed to prevent events that led to WWI. Embargo against both warring nations and gave the President the power to warn US citizens to not go to those countries
Neutrality Acts of 1939
Aware that France and Britain desperately needed war materials= “cash and carry” system
Wagner Act
Guaranteed the right of unions to organize and to collectively bargain with management.
Lend Lease Act
Ignored the neutrality acts. Allowed US to funnel weapons to GB with just promise of return
Korematsu vs United States
1944 Supreme Court case where the Supreme Court upheld the order providing for the relocation of Japanese Americans. It was not until 1988 that Congress formally apologized and agreed to pay $20,000 2 each survivor
