Sympathetic/adrenergic agonist, synthetic sympathomimetic

Mechanism of Action
A
- Immediate bronchodilation with minimal cardiac side effects
- Stimulates the beta2 adrenergic receptors
- Produces relaxation of bronchial smooth muscles and bronchodilation

Indications
A
- Bronchial asthma, reversible bronchospasm associated with chronic bronchitis and emphysema

Contraindications
A
- Hypersensitivity
- Significant tachycardia, especially those caused by possible digitalis toxicity

Adverse Effects
A
- Palpitations, anxiety, dizziness, headache, nervousness, tremors, HTN, arrythmias, chest pain, nausea, vomiting

Administration
A
- 0.25 mg subQ or IM every 20 minutes for 3 doses

Special Considerations
A
- Monitor vitals signs, caution in elderly patients with cardiovascular disease or HTN
- Beta blockers may blunt the effects of terbutaline
