Mechanism of Action

A
  • Counteracts the toxicity of hyperkalemia by stabilizing the membranes of the cardiac cells, reducing likelihood of fibrillation.
  • Increases cardiac contractility
  • Maintains cell membrance & capillary permeability
  • Acts as an activator in transmission of nerve impulses

A
  • V-Fib
  • Digitalis toxicity
  • Hypercalcemia
  • Otherwise none in the cardiac arrest setting

Special Considerations

A
  • Do not administer IM/SubQ, causes signficant tissue necrosis
  • IV should be flushed between calcium chloride and sodium bicarb to avoid precipitation.
