Mechanism of Action
A
- Counteracts the toxicity of hyperkalemia by stabilizing the membranes of the cardiac cells, reducing likelihood of fibrillation.
- Increases cardiac contractility
- Maintains cell membrance & capillary permeability
- Acts as an activator in transmission of nerve impulses

Indications
A
- Hyperkalemia
- Hypocalcemia
- Hypermagnesemia
- Calcium channel blocker OD

Contraindications
A
- V-Fib
- Digitalis toxicity
- Hypercalcemia
- Otherwise none in the cardiac arrest setting

Adverse Effects
A
- Soft tissue necrosis
- Hypotension
- Bradycardia (if administered too rapidly)

Administration
A
- Adult: 500-1000 mg of 10% solution slow IV/IO push

Special Considerations
A
- Do not administer IM/SubQ, causes signficant tissue necrosis
- IV should be flushed between calcium chloride and sodium bicarb to avoid precipitation.
