- Conteracts exisiting acidosis

Indications
A
- Acidosis
- Drug intoxications (barbiturates, salicylates, methyl alcohol)
- Late management of cardiac arrest
- Tricyclic antidepressant OD
- Severe acidosis refractory to hyperventilation

Contraindications
A
- Metabolic alkalosis

Adverse Effects
A
- Metabolic alkalosis
- Hypernatremia
- Injection site reduction
- Sodium & fluid retention
- Peripheral edema

Administration
A
- 1 mEq/kg IV/IO slowly, repeat 0.5 mEq/kg in 10 minutes

Special Considerations
A
- Can deactivate catecholamines
- Can precipitate with calcium
- Delivers large sodium load
